Who we are

Returning from WWII, like most of their fellow veterans, the men and women of Decatur set out to build a better community for their children and families. They built schools, churches, a fire house, a Boy Scout Chapter, and so much more. Chartering a new VFW Post 6248 was the first step in purchasing one of their goals, a community center. They wanted a place for their friends and neighbors to gather. A place to sing and dance, get married, celebrate anniversaries and honor loved ones who have passed.

They began in modest surroundings moving from a rented space to an church building where they could first offer a gathering place for our community. Then came an opportunity to grab the the brass ring. A perfect plot of land on the edge of town became available. Seven acres that nowhold a pavilion open to the public, Raider Romp for kids and their families, and the culmination of their efforts, the event center.

The post brother hood and its auxiliary were blessed with hard working and talented people. There were welder, brick layers, masons, carpenters, painters and electricians among their membership. One member was an excavating contractor who supplied all the site preparation with his equipment and workers. In the fall of 1976 the original building was dedicated, and it was a hit. A decade later an addition almost doubled the original square footage was added, again build by the post members.

Now, years later the community center that was once a dream is a reality and one of the largest and most attractive in the area providing the services to the community and surrounding area just as the post members had intended. A plaque inside the entry way dedicates the facility to the veterans of WWI, WWII and Korea whose dream it was to create this beautiful facility.

The venue center has hosted countless weddings, anniversaries, baby showers, graduation party, business meetings, holiday celebrations and much more. The local school system has used it for testing, conference dinners and is the designated shelter in place location in an emergency.
